Beauty’s new mood: Spring/Summer ’20 makeup trends
Finally, spring is here and we’re ready to embrace colour – playing with beautifully bold brights which deliver pigment pay-off and high sophistication. Now’s the time to resurrect, or, invest in shades which push the boundaries, mixing neons, pastels and glossy textures. Sound a little daunting? Fear not, this trend can be integrated into your look easier than you may think. Read on to get the low-down.
Let’s start with the base. For spring / summer, a natural and dewy complexion is the look to covet. Emma, Dior City MUA and the Creative Lead of The Elys Edit SS20 Fashion Show says flawless, radiant skin is the focus. To achieve this on Jessica, Emma used a thin layer of foundation with a well-blended concealer. Create this yourself by reaching for Dior’s Forever Skin Glow Foundation and its trusty partner the Forever Corrector.
For an injection of colour, team your glowing complexion with a soft pink petal blush, as seen on Dene’s portrait. Rosy Glow is a versatile blush which works on all skin tones and revives a soft hue when positioned on the apples of the cheeks.
‘Cool pinks and neutral rose rule the runways and is an easy way to achieve a fresh-face and youthful appearance’
Emma Cook, Dior City MUA.
Gone are the days where gloss would be answered immediately with ‘sticky’ in a quick Beauty word association fire-round. Following so much formula and ingredient innovation in the industry, gloss – whether applied to eyes, cheekbones or lips – can now be worn with ease. A huge trend on the SS20 runways, Emma used this texture for The Elys Edit layering Dior Lip Oil over lipstick on models Jessica and Kirsty. Nowadays, we’re all about making our Beauty products multi-use, so Emma suggests also tapping it onto eyelids, cheeks and down the bridge of your nose to give your face extra dimension.
When asking Emma what the makeup colour of the season is, purple and lilac are the ultimate shades. To add a subtle pop of the hue and accentuate your features, gently run a purple shadow from Dior’s Five Colour Magnify Palette beneath the lower lashes. On Kirsty, the look was elevated a step further with a slick of black mascara and a touch of blue shadow to the inner corners of her eyes.
Ready to up the ante? Grab a coloured eyeliner – the brighter the better according to Emma. Use a formula that works for you. If you’re confident in application try liquid, or if you’re getting to grips with experimenting, stick with a kohl pencil. Once you’ve made your selection, simply run over the upper lash line and add a little flick at the outer eye corner. This is a fun and fresh technique which feels unexpected without being over-the-top and was Emma’s inspiration when creating playful makeup on our model Betsie using Diorshow On Stage Liner.
The ‘no makeup, makeup’ look is certainly here to stay. So, make the most of what you have and use neutral shades and earthy tones to enhance your features. Emma created this trend on Geenay for The Elys Edit SS20 Fashion Show, using soft smoky brows to define our model’s beautiful green eyes. A pop of blush on the apples of the cheek gives the overall look a youthful freshness, and finish with a natural gloss lip.
Emma’s top tip:
‘Prep lips with Dior’s Lip Sugar Scrub to ensure a hydrated base. Then you’re ready to swipe on your favourite lipstick shade.’
