jolly's history
1810
James Jolly, having run a drapery in Winchester since 1801, opened a linen store in Deal, Kent. Known for quality linens and service, he expanded to Margate by the 1820s, where his son Thomas ran the shop—marking the beginnings of the Jolly’s brand.
1823
James opened a seasonal Bath shop managed by Thomas. The Parisian Depot soon became permanent at 20 Old Bond Street (1829), laying the foundation for Bath’s most enduring department store.
1831
Due to growth, Jolly’s moved to 12 Milsom Street, and by 1836 had expanded into No. 11 with a new shop front.
1911
Jolly’s expanded into Nos. 10 (1909) and 9 (1911) Milsom Street, enhancing its luxury offering and cementing its status as a premier Bath department store.
1927
Morleys Stores was founded with the acquisition of Morleys Brixton, which became a retail landmark in South London and remains part of the group today.
1934
Queen Mary’s Dressing Room was added at Jolly’s Bath, reflecting royal elegance and enhancing the store’s prestigious image.
1971
Jolly’s was acquired by House of Fraser. Earlier, it had expanded into Nos. 7 and 8 Milsom Street, formerly Cavendish House.
2018
By 2018, Morleys Stores had significantly expanded its presence in the UK retail market, growing its portfolio to eight department stores. This included Elys in Wimbledon, Camp Hopson in Newbury, and Pearsons in Enfield—each with a distinct identity and loyal customer base—enhancing Morleys’ reputation for blending heritage with modern retail.
2025
After announcing Jolly’s closure in Dec 2024, Morleys Stores announced plans in March 2025 to take over the site. Following council-led restoration, Morleys will revive the Jolly’s name, preserving its legacy for future generations in Bath.
